Christian = ?

I know that I live in a day and age where I am judged by the word “Christian”, but the problem with “Christian” is that there is no singular definition that suffices.
Is it “Christian” by my standard or yours, because they are probably not the same?

“Christian” has taken so many meanings from so many corners of the world for so many different eras. For some, “Christian” gets its definition from the Crusades. For others, it is the standard by which my wife wears her hair. And, I agree with you those two are not even close to being on the same playing field, but that is how diverse and how polar the word “Christian” has become. It has taken on its definition from the actions or lack thereof of those who are supposed to be learners of Jesus.

So, you can have “Christian” I don’t want it. I don’t want to have my life governed by a sliding scale of judgment, innuendo or manipulation. You can try and put the term on me, but I’ve decided not to wear it.

I’ve decided that I would rather get lost in the identity of Jesus. I want to live, love and look like him. Oh, he had his accusers. He had those who wanted him silenced. They were more interested in their name, their pedigree, and their protocol. The accuser’s religious pride could not handle someone who just did not care about his religious appearance or his family name.

Yes, I’ve decided that I want my life to be on a trajectory of Christ. If I can stay on that trajectory, then my life will have meaning. I’ll agree with you again; I’m still a long way off, but that is where I am heading.

By the way, I love the way my wife does her hair.

You Don’t Have To Live; You Get To!

Location, Location, Location

My wife and I just travelled much of yesterday and through the night last night. We journeyed for nineteen hours all in, to set ourselves up for the next week, month, year and years; my wife for a major trip, myself for a major course for credentialing, and to help my two daughters for a significant shift in their locations.

The key is that we couldn’t do anything for any of that without a change of our position. The location change is temporary but vital and necessary for the accomplishment of all those goals.

I’ve heard the phrase, so you must have too, “Location, Location, Location.” From the phrase, from the emphasis, location is a huge deal, but it is.

Our place we hold in life, the place we currently are and the place we need to be is location or attitudinal particular.

What changes do you need to make to prepare your readiness, your availability, your centre of operation? What trip do you need to make in your thoughts or attitudes to be proximal for your next move or project?

Faith filled living is all about trajectory and movement towards the object of our faith, Christ.

Take a moment and check your setting. Get proximal to his purpose for your life. If necessary, make the plans and get moving.

Molehills and Mountains

Growing up in my culture I heard the idiom fairly often; “Don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.”

I guess I had life bigger than my perspective, and obviously, quite a bit of it, either that or it became my parent’s easy answer from their proverbial grab bag.

During a great ‘God’ conversation with a good friend, it occurred to me this week that Jesus was trying to get us to look with perspective by using his teaching of a mustard seed and a mountain. (Matthew 17:20)

I haven’t yet seen a physical mountain move in my 56 years. I am also not aware of an account of it happening since Jesus walked and taught here. So, what was Jesus trying to get across? Was he just using a metaphor?

I think this particular teaching was all about perspective. He wanted us to catch his thoughts and his reference point.

In a day of sandals and dust, mountains were about the biggest things around. Conversely, mustered seeds were about the smallest.

When you have a minuscule amount of faith, huge things can happen.

But, our faith can’t be in faith alone. It’s not about what we can muster, and it’s not about us; we are not the subjects of its focus. It also is not about our faith coming up against this massive mountain because it is minuscule in comparison and it just wouldn’t matter.

Rather this teaching is where our faith gets placed. What is your faith trajectory? It has to be about our faith in God, who from his perspective could have the earth as the size of a mustard seed; from his universal vantage he doesn’t even see mountains as obstacles. These ‘obstacles,’ just don’t exist in his context.

So isn’t it about time that you make your mountain a molehill?

Mountains move when we see from God’s perspective.
